I think it's done now. Hopefully it's good?
Name: Mattias Andersen
Country of Origin: Kingdom of Denmark (Kongeriget Danmark)
Gender: Male
Age: 22
Height/Weight: 5'11 175lbs
Hair/Eye Colour: Blond hair/blue eyes
Affiliation: Ex-pirate
Job: Mercenary/wanderer?
Appearance: Tall and broad-shouldered, Mattias' whole manner exudes confidence in himself, sometimes a little too much. He's often cheerful and smiling or whistling a tune with his double-bladed axe cocked over one shoulder or leaning on it. His blonde hair is short but wild and long bangs are always swept to one side out of his blue eyes. He doesn't care too much about the state of his clothing as long as its doing its job, which along with his charm helps give him the appearance of one who takes life as it happens.
Personality:
Appears cheerful and confident most of the time, even when its inappropriate to do so. Mattias has a hard time understanding that the world isn't there to do as he says, and so his mouth and intentions can get him into trouble. Sometimes this can be solved by application of brute force, and sometimes he just has to escape with his life. He tries to get by on his charm, but inevitably his pushy nature will either push people away or piss them off.
His overwhelming confidence both brings people to him and can scare them away as he knows exactly who he is and what he wants and no one will take that from him. At times that confidence can easily turn to arrogance, especially when pride is involved. He hates to admit that he could be wrong and will ignore opposition unless there's overwhelming evidence to the contrary. Even then he won't admit it. He also has quite the temper and when angered enough can just fly into a violent rage, though thankfully it never lasts very long.
He values his freedom over almost all else, and will fight to keep it that way. Mattias never wants to be tied down, and yet he's a people person. He likes to talk, brag about his accomplishments and drink with strangers. He'll befriend anyone on a whim, cheerfully chatter away and share a meal. It's only when you question what he says that he can flip and show his darker nature.
Likes:
+ The sea and the open air.
+ Freedom, not having to answer to anyone and to do as he pleases.
+ Alcohol and a good fight.
+ His axe, his one precious possession.
+ Being in control of his own life
Dislikes:
- The Military and their "Do this 'cause I said so."
- Anyone who doesn't trust his word and his abilities, to the point of trying to guide him to the 'right way'.
- Conforming to any kind of schedule or routine.
- Being lonely.
Fears:
~ Dying alone.
~ Dying an ignoble death.
~ Being useless and having to depend on others.
~ Being tied down, forced against his will.
Strengths:
& He's deadly with his axe due to countless hours of practice and countless fights with it.
& His instincts are good, and he often listens to them which can get him out of trouble.
& His confidence brings people to him slightly more than it can push them away.
& He has some skill in leadership and can naturally take charge. If his personality doesn't get in the way, he might even be decent at it.
Weaknesses:
* He's stubborn as all hell, and once convinced he's going in the right direction it's nearly impossible to stop him.
* Pride. His ego is large and when harmed beware.
* He also has a hot temper and can be easily angered.
* Alcohol, he's a heavy drinker and while Mattias has a high tolerance for it, the more he drinks the more he can let down his guard. It's just as much a cause of fights as his pride and temper can be.
History:
Mattias was born in Copenhagen to a family that owned a small bookshop. He and his brother were read tales of amazing creatures and adventures every night, which is probably why as soon as he was old enough he decided leave for his own adventure. He first considered the military just to join the navy, but that lasted less than a day once he saw how the higher-ups treated recruits. Instead he joined up as a deckhand on a merchant boat and went out to sea.
There he found his love for the sea and sailing itself. Being out in the open air, the crash of waves and spray in his face, the rock of the boat as he slept at night. It was everything he was looking for. There was just one problem: He didn't much care for taking the captain's orders, especially when he wasn't allowed to give his own input. A few reprimands and being thrown in the brig for insubordination later, the ship he was on got attacked by pirates. Mattias defended himself, but didn't exactly help the rest of the crew. The most able-bodied were given the option to join the pirates or join the fate of the rest. He enthusiastically joined, seeing his moment of escape.
As a pirate, Mattias found the freedom he was looking for. Here everyone had to prove their own worth, even the Captain. There was no respect if you weren't good enough, and so he worked to be one of their best. During one specific raid he gained the large double-bladed axe he carries with him everywhere, and almost instantly it became his preferred weapon. This seemed to be his place in life, where he was either feared or admired and could do as he pleased. But it wasn't to last.
His time as a pirate ended as a result of his growing overconfidence in himself and the jealousy of a few fellow crew members. No one likes a braggart, and he crowed about himself one too many times. Three fellow pirates plotted to kill him while he was on watch late at night. They piled him with plenty of rum, waited til everyone had gone to bed and he was alone on the bow. Mattias almost didn't hear them in time, moving just as they pounced on him. He was stabbed in the shoulder and thigh in the scuffle that ensued, along with plenty of scratches and bruises but just barely managed to fight them off. One of the men was killed in the fight, another badly hurt. The last was heading below deck, so Mattias decided it was time to leave. He took a small boat and rowed to the nearest shore, then abandoned it and went inland to remake himself as a wandering man for hire.
Sample/Character Introduction:
This was the life. Out in the open air, free to wander from place to place as he pleased. No one to tell him what to do or give orders and expect them followed. This was true freedom. Mattias whistled a tune as he wandered down a gravel road that cut through a stretch of grassy plains. It was a fine day, bright and sunny with just a little breeze. Perfect for traveling. It had rained before he left the last town, but thankfully the clouds seemed to have all floated away. He hated traveling in the rain. Slogging along in knee-deep mud, soaked to the skin, was horribly depressing, and he hated being depressed. Better to wait somewhere dry, if not warm as well for the rain to pass. But this was a great day to be out on a journey.
It was time to move on to a new town anyways. He was getting bored there, and no one was looking for a mercenary. The last job he had was nice, got to go to sea again as part of a merchant ship's protection from pirates. Which was kinda funny when you thought about it, as not too long ago he had been one. Probably still would have been one if people would listen to him more often. It's not like he wasn't good at it, he worked hard at being this good and he knew what he was doing. But there was always someone who didn't get it. Who didn't understand his talents. So he had to leave. It was better to work for yourself anyways, and now he had the perfect life, right?
Okay, so he was a bit lonely. Maybe a whole lot lonely. But people got lonely all the time, even those as good as him. Had to deal with being lonely if you didn't want to be tied down. So it was fine. He was fine. A bit hungry, as following this road to the next town was longer than he had figured and he couldn't go about eating all the food he had bought for the journey before he got his next job, but it was still fine. Maybe he'd find something good in this next town. A job that was worth a real adventure, something worthy of his skills. Probably not another chance at sea as he was going inland, but maybe someone rich needed a bodyguard for a few days or there was a good fight to be had. He didn't get to do too much but toss a stowaway overboard on the last trip, so he was well overdue for a fight or two. Something good had to happen in this next place.
He was sure of it.
