Name: Ludwig Weillschmidt
Country of Origin: Bundesrepublik Deutschland (Federal Republic of Germany)
(Technically, at this point in time, it'd be the German Empire, or Deutches Reich)
Gender: Male
Age: 21
Height/Weight: 6'0"/170 lbs.
Hair/Eye Colour: Pale blond/ light blue
Affiliation: Citizen
Job: Engineer/technician
Appearance:
Ludwig is tall and muscular, and generally fastidious about his appearance. His skin is very fair (he sunburns easily), and his blond hair and blue eyes (actually rather uncommon for people from his country) add to his pale appearance. He keeps his hair cut very short and almost always slicked back away from his face; the exception to this is when he's exercising (or of course when he's caught off guard in the middle of getting ready). His eyes are a little slender, and usually narrowed in scrutiny or observation; this, compared with his severely tidy appearance makes Ludwig appear as a very strict person, or even someone perpetually angry, to the casual observer.
Personality:
Outwardly - in public, at work, and to those he only considers casual acquaintances - Ludwig comes off as a very strict, almost rigid individual. He seems to live his life according to an invisible schedule book: he's never late, works dedicatedly when he needs to, plays hard in his free time, and somehow manages not to crush his psyche under the strain. Polite but frank in conversation, Ludwig seems to be rather stoic, or at least mildly discontented, most of the time. To people he dislikes, he's usually fairly abrupt, and prefers to confront annoyances rather than ignore them. He's very driven, and observant of the world around him, but also a bit of a stickler for rules, no matter how arbitrary they may be.
The real Ludwig, however, is hidden to all but those who know him best. The truth is he isn't serious and stern one hundred percent of the time. He can actually be quite curious, and has a kind side to him; Ludwig cares deeply for his older brother, and is quite protective of people and creatures weaker than him. He even possesses a sense of humor. Unfortunately, even around those he trusts, he's quite guarded with his emotions, and seldom shows how he feels openly. It takes quite a lot of effort to pull him out of this shell. One exception to the rule seems to be anger, as Ludwig appears to lose his temper rather easily, but actually, his anger is almost a defensive mechanism: if he's nervous, embarrassed, upset, irritated, or anything similar, Ludwig guards himself by getting mad.
Ludwig does have a few rather large flaws in his personality: he's rather stubborn - and while he doesn't give up easily, he's unlikely to abandon an idea or plan that's doomed to fail, likes to be in control of a situation to ensure it's dealt with correctly, and he's more than a little ambitious. But Ludwig is also unfalteringly loyal, and would easily step in the line of fire to protect those dear to him. While Ludwig might be a difficult man to get along with and a bit of a bore at times, first impressions can certainly be deceiving.

~ Being helpless
Strengths:
& Marksmanship
Ludwig knows how to use different weapons to some ability, but he's best with guns. When he has time to spare, he can set up some good shots, but even when he's taken by surprise he's careful and precise. He can use all kinds of guns but prefers pistols, as they're light and easy to conceal.
& Strength
Ludwig dislikes being idle and exercises every day that he can; as a result, he's gotten very strong and fit. He prefers not to use this skill if he doesn't have to, as he doesn't like the whole muscle-head stereotype that occasionally arises, but he's certainly willing to lend his abilities to those in need. He is also very, very tough, and doesn't go down easily even when he's injured.
& Handy
From a young age, Ludwig had a natural aptitude for figuring out how things worked and fit together. And, if he couldn't quite understand how something functioned, he'd just take it apart (and hopefully put it back together again subsequently). All of this tinkering eventually matured into a sharp and precise understanding of the laws of physics, work, and mechanics, advanced to the degree that Ludwig can build or fix something properly in his head before he even gets to work on the physical item. He's a very adept engineer, and has even tried his hand at designing some projects of his own.
& Strategy
All of the education Ludwig went through certainly aided this, but he's always been observant and sharp - at least when it comes to situations. He can be quite clever and tricky, and while he's not as experienced with fighting tactics as his brother, he's still a good leader, and continues to add to his repertoire every day, in any way that he can.
& Perserverance
Simply, Ludwig doesn't give up. On problems, on people, on anything. While part of this is due to his fear of failure (giving up equals failing to him), he's also a firm believer in the power of hard work and dedication, and is willing to give himself as many tries as he needs to achieve something or get something right.
& Reason
Ludwig is a grounded and rational person, and thinks with his head rather than with his emotions. This keeps his mind clear and organized even at the worst of times, and he can think very quickly on his feet. Occasionally he can even calm people down by being a solid and reasonable shoulder to lean on.
& Protectiveness
While he may not ever outwardly show it, Ludwig cares deeply about his family and close friends, and even coworkers he knows. He will never refuse help to someone in need of it, and will sometimes go far out of his way or comfort zone to accommodate the needs or wants of those he trusts. Needless to say, he would easily take a blow to spare his loved ones' pains.
Weaknesses:
* Stubborn
The other side of the double-edged sword of perseverance applies to Ludwig as well: even when a situation is beyond hopeless, he refuses to give up, despite that it might be the right thing to do. And while Ludwig adapts easily to changes around him, changing himself and the ways he lives his life is nearly impossible.
* Strict
True, it's good to have some discipline in one's life, but Ludwig takes that to a nearly ridiculous degree. He sticks to rules absolutely, even if they might be wrong or cruel, and doesn't tend to question authority. He's even harder on himself, occasionally working himself to the point of exhaustion; Ludwig has frequent problems with stress and anxiety but doesn't allow anyone to intervene on his behalf.
* Emotion
Ludwig is very guarded with his emotions, and while it's true that there are some advantages to concealing what he's thinking, more often than not the act just ends up isolating him from those around him. His occasional bursts of "anger" don't help his cause, and he has an especially hard time making lasting friendships.
* Reading People
While Ludwig is observant concerning non-living things, he's absolutely awful at determining what other people are thinking. He frequently missteps and makes mistakes when dealing with others, and is almost shy to a degree because of it. Ludwig is just woefully naive about how people express themselves, in short.
* Pessimism
For someone who doesn't give up easily, Ludwig certainly has a knack for seeing the negative side of things. He will think up each and every way something can go horribly wrong, and while Ludwig insists he's merely being realistic, there's no doubt that this affects his mood, and even the mood of others a bit, almost as though he is setting himself up for hardship on purpose.
* Anger
Unlike his older brother, Ludwig is actually a patient person, and does not truly lose his temper very quickly or very often. When something does push him over the edge, however, it's best to watch out, or perhaps just leave him alone all together, because not only does it take him a while to calm down, but he's absolutely merciless with his anger in the meantime.
* Naivete
As intelligent and clever as Ludwig is, he's been relatively sheltered for most of his life and knows surprisingly little about what constitutes an average life. While he's certainly a quick learner, he's still rather woefully ignorant about many things, and struggles at times to come across as a normal and well-adjusted person.
History:
Born three years after his brother Gilbert, Ludwig was as different from his elder sibling as day was to night. Nonetheless, he treasured his older brother, and followed him everywhere; when Gilbert left the Weillschmidt house for good, Ludwig was stricken with unhappiness - at least until the letters started arriving. Determined to write back, he acquired an early knowledge of reading and writing, and did his very best to write back quickly. Eventually, as he grew a little older, he came to understand why exactly Gilbert had fled when he did.
However, circumstances had changed substantially for Ludwig: considering their first son an "unavoidable error" at best, his parents had instead focused all of their attention on ensuring that the younger boy didn't turn out the same way. Ludwig had never proved much of a risk - he was quiet, cautiously curious, and didn't like to cause trouble - but still, he found himself constantly supervised and reined in, punished severely for even the slightest transgressions. A respect for rules quickly grew in Ludwig's mind, and he began to fear even stepping slightly over those invisible lines. Friends and free time were restricted, certain subjects were absolutely off-limits; Ludwig learned more from Gilbert's letters about the world and people around him than he learned from his own experiences.
One word always seemed to hover nearby during these years: disappointment. If Ludwig ran away, his parents said, it would be such a disappointment. If he didn't study hard for school, that would be a disappointment too. Eventually, disappointment had to only hang unsaid but implied in the air, and Ludwig would flee in panic from it, throwing himself into his studies furiously and doing everything he could to meet his parents' expectations. Only one aspect of his life remained secretive: the letters he continued to receive and write to his brother. Confused by the differences between the world Gilbert described and the one he'd been raised in, Ludwig eventually reasoned that if he wanted to know the truth, he'd just have to find out for himself.
His hard work and intelligence eventually earned him a position in a prestigious secondary school; there, Ludwig worked even harder, and although he excelled in almost all of the subjects, he found it nearly impossible to make any good friends, due in part to his lacking social skills and perhaps, to his unusual personality. Increasingly isolated, he found solace in the outdoors and in books. After he graduated (as quickly as he could), unsure of what to do with himself, he entered college right away and began to truly nurture his hidden talents. Although his parents were first very displeased with his choice of engineering as a focus, Ludwig managed to sway them with tales of constantly improving and evolving machines, and the money to be made in that area of work.
College also proved an excellent place for Ludwig to start learning things first-hand; that had been his goal, after all. While this life was overwhelming at first, he managed to pull himself together with his usual tenacity and soon the challenges didn't seem too frightening or problematic after all. A very serious problem arrived, however, when his brother's usual letters stopped appearing. For a few weeks, Ludwig tried to reason away his worries, but eventually he began to feel frightened that something horrible had happened - especially since a letter a year or so ago had included an extra sealed envelope, instructing him to "read this if I disappear". Quickly giving in, Ludwig broke the seal and learned about his brother's horrible captivity, the torture and treatment he had undergone.
Unable to sleep for days afterwards in horror and shock, Ludwig abandoned his classes in order to try and properly search for Gilbert. But it soon readily became apparent that his brother had left little, if any, trace of his presence, and as the last time Ludwig had seen him, he'd been maybe thirteen years old, he couldn't even provide a good description. Eventually, he exhausted all of his leads and was forced to abandon his search entirely.
In despair, Ludwig withdrew even further from normalcy, and constantly on edge with anxiety, he ended up in a fight with a stranger outside a bar that landed him in the hospital with a concussion and a broken nose. When he was back in his apartment to recover, Ludwig went through the old letters he'd received to try and find some kind of closure; instead, what he found was a constant theme of encouragement, an invisible cheerleader in the lines. He realized quickly that the person he truly, absolutely didn't want to disappoint was his brother, and, although Gilbert would probably have been proud of him for finally getting in some kind of fight, he probably wouldn't have wanted Ludwig to quit everything just for his sake. Somewhat reassured, the young man got slowly back to work, although his brother's misfortune and apparent death still pained him greatly. When, out of the blue after about a year, he received a new and cheerful letter from Gilbert, the reply he sent was twice as long as usual due to the vast amount of relief and swear words it contained.
Ludwig graduated college with highest honors and immediately opened his own shop in the larger city, specializing in fixing and tuning up any kind of vehicle, and business has been reliably steady ever since.
Sample/Character Introduction:
When he'd first arrived at the manor, Ludwig had expected to be thrust into work quickly, so that he'd always have a valuable way to occupy his day. But that turned out not to be the case: he learned that work was mostly mission-based, which meant he had a great deal of sudden free time; adding to this, his own government had been sending him work only sparingly, despite his assurances that he could handle anything. According to a note from the Administrators he'd found in his apartment, this stretch of freedom was "Adjustment Time" (the capital letters denoted importance), during which he was supposed to be accustoming himself to the manor, the rules, and the grounds. Well, Ludwig had done a lot of that, but nevertheless found himself bored at times. If he didn't have a book in his hands, he had no reason to be sitting still.
There were few places on the grounds he had yet to explore, and the hedge maze had been one. Ludwig considered it frivolous; who in their right mind would spend an afternoon getting lost in a bunch of trees? But he didn't want to be inside on such a pleasant day, so he'd slapped on an old cap and headed into the dense tangle of hedges. For a little while, it had been kind of fun, Ludwig had to admit. The thrill of exploring a new place, of dodging down new pathways and discovering new things like the small stone birdbath located neatly in a dead end he'd stumbled into. But after a while, after ceaseless fresh green hedge after hedge, Ludwig began to get doubly bored. And what was worse, he'd obviously become lost. He'd known the risk before he'd gone in and considered bringing a ball of twine, but he'd come here specifically to waste time. Now, though, staring moodily at the tapestry of leaves, Ludwig decided he'd rather be inside baking or reading - not wandering aimlessly in this thing.
Striding off purposefully in one direction, eyes and mind fixed on his goal, Ludwig proceeded to get even more hopelessly lost than he had been before. He passed a tree he'd never seen, another birdbath quite different from the first, even a small bench which was tempting for a moment before he remembered he needed to leave. The blond nearly jumped out of his skin when he passed along a T-intersection and spied another human; a double take revealed the identity of the woman. Ludwig let out a low sigh as his heart slowed down.
"Hey," he raised a hand in greeting before approaching her. Belgium wore a slightly confused and vacant expression, and Ludwig assumed the worst. "So... you're lost too?"
